Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

Without any doubt my favorite teacher was Mr. Howard Elliot. He was the band director at Chippewa Falls High School in Wisconsin. He demanded the students’ best behavior and undivided attention. He was strict; he challenged us; he worked us…and we loved him for it. Our band performed to the best of our abilities and behaved like professionals! Thank you, Mr. Elliot!

What are three things every teacher should own?

Every teacher needs a car with a big trunk, a sense of humor, and forty hours a day!

What are three things every teacher should own?

1. “Open house” tie – each year I wear the same tie to open house. Maybe it doesn’t have to be a tie, but something that represents the start of the new school year.

2. Nalgene water bottle – in this profession you have to stay hydrated to avoid massive headaches.

3. Cheap scrapbook – all teachers should have someplace to store the memories. I find myself getting cute notes and emails from parents and students that I want to be able to look back at someday.

What is the greatest misconception about teachers?

That they are actually offended by the “you only work 180 days a year joke.” We know the joke is not on us…

Describe your all-time favorite lesson/unit activity.

I love teaching history. The kids and I get lost in the stories and role playing that I create in my classroom. My all-time favorite activity is when the principal comes in to my room wearing a crown and carrying "edicts". He sits down on his throne with his Parliament members sitting next to him (they are picked randomly) while his colonists sit in front of him waiting to hear if and what they will be taxed on.

What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?

Marine Biologist

Describe your all-time favorite lesson/unit activity.

I love it when we grow butterflies in the spring. My students also love this activity. It is hands on and every child gets to be involved.

What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?

I can't imagine another job that is as fulfilling, interesting, and exciting that doesn't involve something like jumping out of an airplane, but if I could pick, I would take the job of Bear Grylls on Man vs. Wild.

How did you know you wanted to be a teacher?

After pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, I realized that I wanted to change peoples lives and outlooks by being proactive rather than reactive.  It wasn't until I was in my first classroom that I truly realized that I was where I was always meant to be!

How did you know you wanted to be a teacher?
My father has just finished his 54th year teaching Fine Arts and English at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA.  So, during my life I have been blessed with a first-hand knowledge of what really good teaching involves:  intelligence, humor, and an unending dedication to making students better.  My dad has shown me this my entire life, and he is STILL going . . . . We both know that teaching gives as much to the teacher as it does to students.
