Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

I've had so many inspirational teachers beginning with my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Eckenrod. She made learning so much fun and introduced us to the wonderful Fudge books. I remember we'd all beg her to read at the end of each day. Teachers (and the authors!) who inspire their students to want to learn and read are amazing.

What are three things every teacher should own?

An open mind and an open heart because each student has unique circumstances and needs. And the third? A laptop (or iPad)--with all the work piled on teachers, it's essential that they can take it with them so they spend every hour of the day at school.

If you could have any person (living, dead or fictional) as a principal, who would it be?

Oprah Winfrey because I know she would always have our back, would hold people--both students AND teachers--accountable for their work and behavior, and she would always approve purchases made that will benefit our students! Plus, I just love and admire her.

What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?

Describe your all-time favorite lesson/unit activity

My novel unit for The Hunger Games is by far my favorite to teach each year!

What is the greatest misconception about teachers?

That we don't work much because we have summers off. If people would just try working the hours we do at the job we do during the school year, they'd need a lengthy vacation, as well. My brother prepared for weeks to give one 30-minute presentation at a sales conference. I told him to try giving five different presentations each day, every day for 180 days. It still didn't convince him that we work hard.

What stereotype about teachers is true?

That we are a clique. I think it's true; we have similar interests, problems, and schedules, so I think it's natural for us to socialize with other teachers more often.
