Who was your favorite teacher? Why?
I had some math teachers growing up that really were helpful people in my life. My middle school teacher, Mr. Allner, helped guide me to make better decisions and he saw what I was capable of. In high school, Mrs. Clausen, didn't let me slack and pushed me to do my best.
What are three things every teacher should own?
1.) Wireless internet and a laptop for home.
2.) An ipod touch (crazy things you can do to keep notes on kids).
3.) A bunch of nice pens.
If you could have any person (living, dead or fictional) as a principal, who would it be?
The Duke!!! I can sure bet we wouldn't have any behavior problems. Teachers who always call in "sick" would most likely be pistol whipped.
What profession other than your own would you most like to attempt?
Sports radio announcer or a chef.
Describe your all-time favorite lesson/unit activity.
I was piloting a social studies curriculum several years ago and there was a lesson that got several people in the school involved. The principal came in and told the kids that they were awarded a certain dollar amount that they could spend on an out of school activity. The kids bit and started planning.
Well, the rules kept changing until there was finally no fun left to be had and the money had to be used with certain rules. They got really mad and frustrated, so I said "You know what, this is just how the colonists felt about what the British were doing to them." Then it clicked in them that this was all a lesson and they were mad. Two kids didn't talk to me for a month. They still remember that lesson though. It was great.
What is the greatest misconception about teachers?
We don't do anything in the summer and we all love to drink coffee.
What stereotype about teachers is true?
We swear a lot in the teachers lounge.
How did you know you wanted to be a teacher?
In 8th grade, I started tutoring some 6th graders. I liked it a lot then too.
