How to Make Your Own Assistive Technology DevicesAssistive technology is a topic that I could go on about for days.  It is definitely an important part of educating students of all ability levels.  Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.

Sometimes when you hear the word technology you think that it has to be expensive, but there are so many things that can fit into the assistive technology category that you probably have sitting in your house right now.

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars to bring assistive technology into your classroom, here are some ideas of assistive technology that you can make to use in your classroom with your students that won’t break the bank.

iPad Stand

This iPad stand is made out of 2 pieces of Stratacore and 2-sided tape. This video will show you how to make it step by step.

Slant Board

To make this slant board I simply used an old three ring binder and put it on its side.  I then hot glued a clip on the top to help hold the paper or material that you put on it in place.

Adapted book:

You can adapt a book for students who are unable to turn the pages by adding a small magnet to each page and having the student use a magnet wand to turn the pages.  For more ideas on how to adapt books, check out this website

With so many options out there, you can easily modify your classroom with assistive technology for differentiating instruction.
