Get the Most Out of Your Holiday Break

How will you spend your holiday break? Will you relax with your family? Get caught up on your housework? Or use this time to try and revitalize your brain? The winter holiday break is the perfect time to do any, and all of these things. Here are a few ideas to help you get the most out of your holiday break.

Have a Plan

The first few days will mostly likely be spent getting ready for Christmas and all of the festivities that come with this wonderful holiday. Use this time to connect and reconnect with your family and friends, not planning out all of the things that you want to accomplish during the few weeks you have off. Start your plan about a week or two before your winter break. Jot down a few things that you would like to accomplish while you're off, meeting a friend for lunch, cleaning out your closet, taking a cooking class, etc. Or, you can create an organized schedule where you plan out each and every day so you are sure not to miss a thing you want to accomplish. As long as you have a few things written down ahead of time, it will help ease your mind.

Once Christmas is over, the presents are put away, and the relatives have left, it is now time to execute your plan. If you are the kind of person who just jotted down a few "to dos," then make sure you do them. If your goal was to take a cooking class, take it! If your plan was to sleep in every chance you get, then do it! If you wrote down a rigorous schedule to follow, then make sure you follow it. You will be so grateful that you made the time to fit in everything that you wanted to do.

Exercise Your Brain

You can also make the most out of your holiday break by using this time to grow professionally. Spend time reading educational books, take a professional development class, or sign up for an online seminar. Carve out some time to learn about what's new in educational innovations. Subscribe to a few RSS feeds on the Internet that focus on keeping teachers in the loop on all of the new and upcoming educational innovations. Or, if you heard about something new in the technology world, take this time during break to learn all about it, so you can implement it into your curriculum.

Here are a few other ways to help rejuvenate your brain over break:

  • Relax! Take a yoga class, get a massage, or meditate.
  • Exercise your mind with fun crossword puzzles or brain teasers.
  • Be creative, and try something new that you have always wanted to try.
  • Exercise your body! Take a brisk walk or try a new workout routine.
  • Go on vacation or take a short staycation (a quick trip within driving distance).

Plan Ahead for your Classroom

Take a day or two and plan ahead for what's coming in the next few months. Remember, students will be adjusting to school again after vacation, so it's best to have lessons and activities already in place. 

Maintain Some Sort of Routine

While you'll be very busy relaxing, exercising your brain, and planning ahead during Christmas break, it's also important to maintain some sort of routine. Many people tend to get stressed out when their daily routine is broken, or they have a really hard time adjusting once they need to get back into it. So, it's best to keep some of your daily routine the same. For example, if you're used to exercising everyday after school, keep up with it. This will help you adjust once you have to go back to work.
