Classroom Management: Healthy Teacher Snack Ideas

Everyone knows that the most important meal of the day is breakfast, yet so many of us do not eat it. Taking the time to make a meal in the morning when we have to get ourselves ready, as well as our children, can be an extremely daunting task. Even using classroom management to find time to eat throughout our busy day in the classroom can be quite hard. It’s easy to grab a granola bar or something frozen and toss it in the microwave, but we all know how unhealthy that can be. That’s why we have thought of a few grab and go snack ideas for busy teachers. You can use these classroom management ideas for a quick snack when you are on the go, or even for breakfast. Try taking a few hours on Sunday to meal prep some of these ideas for the week. Then, all you have to do is grab them and go!

Classroom Management: Sweet and Salty Trail Mix

There are plenty of trail mixes out on the market that are packaged nicely and conveniently. However, you never know what artificial ingredients they are going to add into them, and a lot of the time you end up with a nut or piece of fruit that you do not like. The best thing to do to make sure you know exactly what is in your snack mix is to take a few minutes and prepare a fresh healthy bowl of your own. You can meal prep for the week on Sunday. All you have to do is place the desired amount (usually 1 cup is a serving) into a plastic bag or a small container and you are ready to go. Here are a few suggestions of what you can toss into it.

Trail Mix

Nuts - Nuts are loaded with healthy unsaturated fats, protein, and fiber. They also have several essential vitamins and minerals in them. You can get them salted, unsalted, roasted, or raw. Some favorites are: Almonds, cashews, peanuts, walnuts, pecans, and macadamia.

Dried Fruit -  This sugary treat can be a great source of fiber and is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins, but you have to be careful how much you add to your trail mix because some fruit are full of sugar and preservatives. Be sure to look for options that have little added sugar. Some favorites are: Apples, cherries, cranberries, blueberries, prunes, raisins, apricots, dates, mango, pineapple chunks, and figs.

Seeds – Seeds provide many of the same benefits as nuts. Some are loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals. Some favorites are: Sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, and flax.

Grains – Grains are complex carbohydrates that you can add for some extra fiber. They give you energy and help to keep you full longer. Some favorites are: Pretzels, granola, popcorn, cheerios, and Chex mix.

Sweets – Sometimes we need to add a little something sweet to give our trail mix that added bonus. A few chocolate morsels or some yogurt raisins and mini marshmallows may just be the added touch that will give you your sweet fix.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Bites

Whether you were up late grading papers or you are just in need of a quick afternoon pick-me-up during your long day of teaching, these peanut butter oatmeal bites will give you the energy you need. They are easy to make, and give you the convenience of being able to snack on the go. They are loaded with vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, fiber, and other essential healthy fats. Here are the ingredients and instructions.


  • 1 cup of soft dates
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • ½ - 1 cup of peanut butter (depends on how much you love it)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract


  1. Process dates into a food processor until they become a creamy consistency. Then add the rolled oats, peanut butter, and vanilla extract. If you find that they are still to dry you can add a little bit of water.
  2. Use your hands to form balls. Place each energy ball onto a cookie sheet and place in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set. Take out after set and enjoy! If you want to bring them to school with you, then I suggest you place them into a sealed container because they can be sticky.

These are just two quick grab-and-go snack ideas that are perfect for an easy breakfast or snack while you are at work. Another great option is to take some time on Sunday to cut up some veggies. Cut up celery sticks and bell peppers are a wonderful snack option. You can load up on vitamins while grading papers or when your students are elsewhere.
