3-5: Journal Entry as a Trapped Miner

The miners were trapped underground for over 60 days.  They had no sunlight and very limited space.  Imagine you are one of the miners.  Write a journal entry describing your experience.  Imagine how you would feel, what you miss the most, and what you would want to do with your freedom as soon as you were rescued.

6-8: Maintaining Healthy Habits

Being trapped underground for over 60 days can be extremely harmful to your health.  With the limited space and zero sunlight, these miners were very restricted on what they were able to do. Doctors were very worried that many of these miners would be in a severe health condition.

Imagine you are one of the miners.  List at least 5 daily activities you would do to make sure you maintained the best health possible while trapped underground.  Include activities that would help maintain both your physical and mental health.

9-12: Plotting a Rescue Mission

In order to rescue the miners, a special shuttle created by NASA was used to bring the miners to the surface.  This rescue mission took very precise attention to detail because many lives were at stake.

Break up into small groups and come up with a rescue plan of your own.  Remember to keep in mind the geographical conditions of the area, the dangers of the miners being underground, and other characteristics that create the hazardous circumstances for the rescue mission.  What kind of equipment would you need?  What kind of professionals would you want to be involved in this mission?
