The much awaited movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, comes out in December. A prequel to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit is a movie that will draw the attention of your students. Spark enthusiasm with your middle and high school students by showing a trailer of the upcoming Blockbuster; then encourage their writing with one of these writing prompts.
In this short clip, Gandalf talks about being afraid and gaining courage. What is something that you have done that required courage? Describe the situation and how you overcame your fear. If you can’t think of something that you have done, what is something that you would like to do that requires courage? How will you take on your fear?
The tagline for the movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, tells us that great legends begin in small places. Can you think of a real person in history, alive or dead, that has grown from a small beginning to a great legend? Discuss how that person became a legend and what makes their story an important one.
