Singing the Praises of a Standout Educator
WESTMINSTER, Vt. (AP) — A music teacher at a Vermont school for kids from troubled backgrounds has been selected as one of 25 semifinalists from across the United States for a first-ever Music Educator Award from the Grammy Foundation.
Lisa Bianconi, music director at the Kurn Hattin Homes for Children in Westminster, is the school's one-person music department, directing two choruses, a jazz band and a marching band.
The 25 semifinalists were selected from more than 30,000 initial nominations.
Bianconi has directed the school's top choir in a performance with Grammy Award-winning fiddler Natalie MacMaster. One of her students was selected as top gospel performer in a regional television contest.
Kurn Hattin has 105 students, with all the kids involved in music.
