K-2: Colors of the Moon
The moon changes color during a lunar eclipse. Let’s imagine that there is a moon for every primary (red, blue and yellow) and secondary (green, orange and purple) color.
1. Draw 6 moons on a page.
2. Color each one with a different primary or secondary color.
3. Write the name of the color underneath its matching moon!
3-5: Space Exploration
During a lunar eclipse, the moon passes behind the earth. When this happens, the moon cannot reflect the sun’s light. That’s why we can’t see the moon from Earth.
Imagine that NASA is sending you to the moon to experience a lunar eclipse from that perspective. What do you think it will be like? Describe your educated guess, or hypothesis, of what you would see if you were on the moon as the earth blocks the sun.
6-8: Your Eclipse Explanation
Imagine you lived in a time where you did not realize what was happening during a lunar eclipse. Imagine all the questions you would have as to what was happening to the moon. Ancient people often made up myths and legends about gods to explain these anomalies.
Come up with your own reasoning as to what is taking place during a lunar eclipse. Think of questions such as why is the moon would disappear? Why does it turn red? Write a paragraph describing your reasoning behind the meaning of an eclipse and its significance.
9-12: Celebrating the Lunar Eclipse
This past lunar eclipse was during a winter solstice. The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year. The winter solstice has historically represented rebirth and was been celebrated in several cultures.
Create a holiday based off of a lunar eclipse. Think about why it is worth celebrating. What rituals would be part of this holiday? What will it represent to you? Write a paragraph describing your holiday.
