Combining Technology in the Classroom, Art in 1 Lesson

Christine Allen

Introducing creativity and art to a lesson may seem a challenge to every teacher. The combination of academic study and artistic methods has a better effect on a process of information assimilation. The engagement of the student rises, and his motivation grows. Recent studies have shown that implementing art in the process of education increases students’ self-esteems, confidence, and desire of self-education.

How Does the Introduction of Art Change Student Attitude?

Academic study always has a dragging effect. Students of college or high school can stand even monotonous lectures, though. For kids, academic study is the best way to kill their interest. That is why an elementary school teacher uses different methods to study kids. However, these methods can also be used for teaching high school students.

Wendy Russell, along with other researchers of higher education, has noticed that, “Double degree programs have significant untapped potential in preparing graduates for employment.” This method of combining art and technology in the classroom in one lesson teaches students how to combine different approaches: the Creative one and the technological one.

The most common problem of all teachers and students is losing the attention. Art helps capture it and engage students in different kinds of activity. Introducing different types of activities into one lesson is another approach of adding creativity to a studying process.

How Do the Arts Influence the Process of Education Itself?

Now we know that introducing of art changes students’ attitude to the process of studying. But we also need to understand how arts really influence the process of studying. Here are five of the most important reasons to add arts for enhancing the process of studying.

1. You find a new way to reach the minds of the students.

All students are different, and each of them requires a different approach. Art allows finding this approach to any student and trying different methods of presenting information.

2. Reducing communication barrier and mastering communication skills.

Some students have strong problems in communication. Traditional ways of carrying the lesson do not fix this problem. Involving students into communication can help some students get rid of fears and become open to communication.

3. Change the environment.

The lessons are usually taken at the class. To add some art to the process of studying, it is always good to change the environment. For example, it is better to study botany in a garden or in a park than sitting in a classroom. Besides, change of the environment positively affects cognitive functions of students.

4. Create new challenges.

Challenges always help people show their best qualities. Adding some unexpected and unusual challenges to the process of education can make students reveal what they are really capable of. Students prefer to deal with challenges that teach them how to behave in a real life. Art helps create this kind of challenges in a lesson.

5. Introducing real experience.

One of the biggest drawbacks of academic education is a lack of real experience. Changing the way of carrying a lesson, a teacher can create a situation where students can get into a real-life situation and look for some ways to find an applicable solution.

Of course, an effect of art always depends on the way of introducing art into the process of education. Trying different approaches to introducing art into the process of studying, a teacher can also reach different results.

What Tools for Implementing Art Should You Use?

The positive influence of implementing art into the studying process depends on the tools that a teacher chooses. Some of them are more effective than others, and some of them have no effect at all. Here are the most effective art methods that can be used for all categories of students.

Visual Arts

Most of the teachers use traditional ways of communication with students: Speaking, listening, and writing. But every thought can be expressed with a help of drawings. Using this way, students learn to create structures and systemize their thoughts. They have limited space to express them so they learn how to use all the resources.

Drama Classes

By implementing drama into the process of education, teachers give their students the opportunity to reveal their capabilities and talents. Role playing is probably the most effective of all drama tools. It involves students physically, and allows getting a real experience.

Music effectively deals with stress, increases concentration, and even makes us clever. Using it in education has multiple positive effects. It is perhaps the best way to reveal new opportunities for students to perform and show off their talents. Besides, music changes the atmosphere from formal into informal in the class.

The best way for a teacher to find an appropriate art tool is to get inspired and communicate with students. Perhaps they have their preferences or want to check their own way of introduction art into the process of studying.  Of course, adding art to a process of education should carry not only entertainment goals, but also educational. That is why a teacher has to make sure that he implements all the goals in the academic plan of the lesson.
