Opinions of a person are formed within the first three minutes of meeting a person. Currently it seems the general public has lost respect for educators and our ability to offer a quality education for our students. No other professional community is critized more harshly than teachers. Society has all the solutions, however few are willing to experience a typical twelve hour daily journey in "teacher land". What connection can be made between this and best dressed teachers? Dress as a professional leader, role model, and teacher not like teenage students or old maids. Wear clothing that makes you feel important - after all teaching is the most important job in America - convey a sense of proudness for each person you come in contact with! Without a pay raise in four years, yet wanting the best for my students and buying materials out of pocket, I shop in upscale consignment establishments for the latest fashions. You know, those purchased by professionals who, like me spent seven years in colleges, but can afford to buy great clothes.

I have the benefit of being raised in a Suburban " if it isn't name-brand stay at home" environment...first teaching job in rural "oh my goodness you color your hair" environment, and now in an urban "anything goes" environment...the way we dress and it's impact on student success is completely relative to the environment you are living/teaching in....wearing a suit that costs more than the monthly income of the population you serve may not be the best of routes to go....likewise...wearing a velour tracksuit and tennis shoes to school while your students are comparing Vuitton handbags is equally mismatched as well.

The key, dressing the way you want to be perceived. Establish your look and invest in long wearing/long lasting basics. Nearly every professional is having to economize, so great staples are key. Many of my most complemented outfits are hand me overs or new to me, however, a pachima or scarf well wrapped, an unusual necklace, and tights!!! can make a great statement and add variety. Reflect the passion and the integrity of the career chosen and every once in a while, get all dressed and go to school.

It's all about the accessories - It's amazing what a $10.00 necklace can do to a basic sweater.

True beauty is expressed by the compassion of one's heart, not by the outward appearance!
